Reflections on touring Australia with The Aristocrats back in 2016

Bryan: Yes, we enjoyed that tour, it was great for The Aristocrats to finally get down to Australia. It's not easy for a band like us to get down there and make it work, we are very grateful to the people at Thump Music who helped make it happen and all the great fans that came out to see us in Perth, Adelaide, Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane. Those were the 5 shows that we did down there. Of course there is some great music going on in Australia, I'm friends with some of the Karnivool guys, especially Jon Stockman because I was so into the bass so...

Have a listen to an exclusive chat I had with legendary Finnish keyboardist Santeri Kallio from Amorphis. We talk about the new direction and sound of their brand new album 'Queen of Time' which will be released May 18, 2018, via Nuclear Blast Records. I also ask about the possibility of an Australian Amorphis tour and for all the vinyl nerds (like myself) I ask whether some of the harder to find titles such as 'Eclipse' will get a re-pressing in the future.

Check out their new music video 'Wrong Direction' from the new album 'Queen of Time'

Levi: The new album Genexus is based on the concept of Artificial Intelligence, what inspired you to write about this?

Burton: It was mostly about Raymond Kurzweil’s theory of a singularity, by 2045 he theorizes that man and machine will become one due to biotechnology. We will be walking bio-machines, perfect in every way and based on this is the term “Genexus” which is what we are calling mankind’s next step in evolution, when man does become machine. It will be the Genexus generation.

Levi: Technology is evolving faster now than it ever has, a lot of these concepts were still ‘science fiction’ back in the ear...

Levi: The last time I saw you guys play was back in 2007 with Decapitated, Do you remember much from that tour?

Karl: I sure do I’ll never forget that tour. Ever. Ever in the history of my life. Not only was it a kick-ass metal tour, but I got injured on the flight over. I was in coach class. Sitting in the middle of two football players. I was so scrunched up, it actually took two of my vertebrates completely out of place. By the time I landed in Australia 20 hours later I had no use of my left arm. Two of my fingers were paralysed. I had to play that tour on painkillers unable to use two fingers in my left han...

On playing in Lamb of God for over 20 years…

John: “It’s been more than half my life now at this point, I hope you’re not being cheeky and calling me old? It does feel like a long time, but it still feels fresh, maybe I’m just lucky enough to have one of the best jobs in the world. It doesn’t feel old, but it definitely has been awhile.

The new album Sturm und Drang

John: We try to outdo ourselves every time we go to record another record. I feel we’ve done this. Every time we go in we say “How are we going do better than what we just did?” We just went in and did the same process we always have, we look for way...

Levi: Can you tell about your new album Underworld?

Michael: We’re definitely happy with the record. It is a little bit of everything and that was a conscious decision too you know. Keep some of the heavy stuff real heavy but also you know get back to some of the more melodic things and some of the progressive stuff and really focus on the song writing, just the flow of the record. That was a lot of the point of the record too, when we started writing too, just really try to make an album that flowed well and that was diverse and had the variety, the real heavy stuff and the melodic stuff, just trying to make it...

Levi: You just got back from a tour with In Hearts Wake, I know you met them earlier in the states. How was it playing in Australia with them?

Dave: I had so much fun on tour with those guys, we love their band and we love their music. It was cool to meet them and see how relaxed they were. Everyone was just a lot of fun on that tour.

Levi: You guys get a lot of hits on Spotify and YouTube, I was surprised to see you as the support band. Do you think if In Hearts Wake came to the US it would be the other way around?

Dave: Yeah, they’re definitely bigger than us in Australia but in America they would definitely s...

Levi: You’ve got a new album, I was lucky enough to get a pre-release of. It’s called Archangel, it sounds great, probably my favourite Soulfly album since Dark Ages. How did it go recording? And are you excited about this one?

Max: Yeah it was done in January, we work on it for last year. Spent all of January recording, came out really good, I’m really happy with it. There’s some really cool guests, Matt [Young] from King Parrot and Todd [Jones] from Nails and there’s a singer from Iran in one of the songs with my kids. Ritchie and Igor [Cavalera] sing on the song ‘Mother of Dragons’. Yeah, it’s a really cool a...

Levi: You’ve got a new album out called Up, how did the recording go? And Are you proud of it?

Matt: Absolutely, I think we are more proud of this album than anything we’ve done in the past. We went into the studio as a band to be creative and to experiment with some new sounds and different things, and I think we really worked together more as a cohesive unit than we have on any other album. We are extremely proud of it and very excited to release it.

Levi: I know Onyx was pretty upbeat, can we expect more of that on this one?

Matt: It’s upbeat but in a different way. We still have some songs that are reminisce...

Levi: How did it go recording Underworld? How was it playing Symphony X after playing with Adrenaline Mob?

Russell: Getting back to Symphony X was pretty easy and straight forward. I worked with Mike (Michael Romeo) with his ideas we used for the record, I recorded everything pretty quickly, about 8 days. The Mob (Adrenaline Mob) kept me in good shape, those songs are really high energy, and I’ve been onstage the whole time. I was really able to go at this record in the best shape of my life. Physically and being able to go in and sing whenever I wanted to, wherever I wanted to and for as long as I wanted to. It...

Levi: You’ve got a new album Hammer of the Witches, it debuted on our Aria charts at number #28. How do you feel about that?

Dani: Yeah that’s not bad, not bad going at all. I think it’s doing well in Germany and England as well. I don’t know the exact figures it was around #19 and #11.

Levi: How did it go recording the album? Are you proud of it?

Dani: Extremely yeah. Obviously it’s a slightly different line-up, we added two new guitarists and that was because we were undertaking a co-headlining tour with Behemoth across Europe last year. We knew one of our guitarists couldn’t do it because of personal reasons...
