INTERVIEW: Damon Johnson (BLACK STAR RIDERS/THIN LIZZY)

January 26, 2017

On the new Black Star Riders album "Heavy Fire"...

Damon: "I would simply say it's the evolution of a band that has made 3 albums in 4 years. A band of very seasoned Rock veterans that have been doing it a long time. The 5 of us as a collective think it is some of the best stuff we've ever done at any point in all of our careers. We still want to be creative and create music, a lot of people in their 40s and 50s have decided to give up on all of that... and I get it, it's not easy. It's a tough world out there, especially for rock music right now, but we're not going to let that deter us, we love to play, we love to write and we've got a really good band.

On working with Alice Cooper...

Damon: Cooper is incredible man, I didn't know him when I joined the band. I had never even seen an Alice Cooper concert, I had some of the albums and I loved the music but I didn't know anything about him. The first 2 or 3 weeks on the road were just kind of mind-blowing. Everyone has this perception of Alice Cooper in our minds, the person that you get to spend time with and ride on the tour bus with, hang back-stage and have dinner with is... He's just like you or me man. He loves music, Rock n' Roll, he loves his family. it was a tremendous experience for me, I would never have been ready for an opportunity like Thin Lizzy if it wasn't for Alice Cooper.

On playing Golf with Alice Cooper...

Damon: I would have to say I've played more Golf than any other Rock musician with the exception of Alice Cooper, for almost 6 years man, if we were on the road, If Alice was playing Golf, I was playing Golf. I can count the amount of times on my hand that I skipped out and let him play Golf by himself. I play a lot, I still love Golf.

Alice has been playing for decades, I didn't really take up golf til I was almost in my 30s, so he was incredible helpfull to me. There were a couple of times I came out on top, but it wasn't because I played like Tiger Woods, it was because Coop didn't have his best day that day and I got lucky.

Thoughts on President Donald J. Trump...

Damon: For all of us that live here, we're stuck with him. We don't have any other choice but to give him a chance. I'm not a fan, but I hope he does some good stuff. I hope he can make some changes in his personality along the way. It's a pretty important job, he will have to make some big decisions. I am cautiously optimistic and very much paying attention. We are going to hold his feet to the fire, if he starts causing problems we will call him out on it.
